How Effective Is Your Church Web Site?

In designing a church web site, there are several questions you should consider before implementing the site. Take a moment to consider the questions below.
  • What is the purpose of your church web site?
  • Will people be blessed by your web site?
  • Will they have a reason to come back to your church web site again?
  • Can you spread the gospel through your teaching via your web site?
  • Do you use PowerPoint sermon illustrations?
  • Many people on the internet are seekers for spiritual needs?
  • Do you have any sermons on your web site?
  • Are you struggling to find the time each week to put text or audio sermons online?
  • How much time do you have each week to maintain sermons on a web site?

It is very important to consider the purpose of your church web site.

Do you enjoy preaching, but wish that more people could hear the message? Have you delivered some sermons that you believe could stir interest the way Jabez prayer does? Do you lead a Bible Study but know that more could benefit from it, if the material were more readily available? There are many aspects to church life and a vital core to this is communication. A church web site can be used as a backbone to provide a means of passing information on, as well as evangelizing, teaching, training, leading an online bible study, providing sermon outlines, even delivering sermons.

An effective site is one that concentrates on providing good content which will bring people back to your site. Just because a site has a great appearance, doesn't mean that people will return to it or come to your church if they don't receive any input into their lives. Far better than appearance is the content.

There is a growing place for developing a "cyber church". Just as many businesses are developing their internet presence as an extension of their "bricks and mortar", or physical store locations, churches need to consider their ability to reach out to people via online cyber churches. This does not mean that these cyber churches will replace the actual church. Rather, they will become an expected or normal supplement to regular church services and mid-week Bible studies. It should be obvious that church web sites cannot afford to remain static. Just as people have found the need to develop warm and inviting church buildings, online church web sites should also project a warm atmosphere. But we suggest that the content is more important than the visual design of a web site.
